NUCLEAR POWER IN INDIA: OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES

NUCLEAR POWER IN INDIA: OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES
An Interactive Session with
Dr Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) &

Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy
17th April 2009 (Friday): 1100 – 1230 hrs:
Hotel Taj Mahal (Crystal Central), Colaba : Mumbai
Chief Guest : Dr Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission

To meet India’s burgeoning energy demand, the power installed capacity would need to grow exponentially in coming years. The Integrated Energy Policy estimates the installed capacity requirement by 2031-32 to be 778,000 MW. In this scenario, India has to opt for an optimal mix of all possible energy sources to meet the electricity demand. Nuclear energy is likely to be a key component of India’s future energy mix.

After the successful completion of Indo-US Nuclear Deal and agreements with few other countries, nuclear energy can be regarded as an important capacity addition strategy to achieve long-term energy security. In order to fully capitalize on the opportunities available in the post deal regime, it is pertinent to open up the Indian nuclear market to private and foreign players. This would require creating enabling conditions for the foreign/private players’ participation, removing regulatory barriers and by ensuring a level-playing field.

In order to understand various barriers in Indian nuclear energy market, debate possible solutions and highlight various business opportunities in the segment, CII is organizing a Session on ‘Nuclear Power in India : Opportunities and Challenges’ on 17 April 2009 at Hotel Taj Mahal (Crystal Central), Colaba, Mumbai. The Session will start at 1100 hrs and conclude at 1230 hrs, followed by lunch.

Dr Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy has kindly agreed to be the Chief Guest at this Session.

‘Reply Form’ is available at GSIA office.
